Christmas Break 2014

We headed south for warmer weather for the Christmas break, and the south delivered :)  We went all the way to Atlanta to visit Robert, Meg, Nate, and Lizzy.  We staged through DC and North Carolina to break up the driving.

Right after Thanksgiving, we did choose what was probably our nicest tree ever.
Christmas Day in northern VA, Lauren insists on trying out her new snowshoes.
Ashley playing her My Little Pony cooperative game.  All players work together to build and erect a rainbow as the gateway to Canterlot.  Quite fun.
 Washington monument en route to...
 ...the NATIONAL CHRISTMAS TREE!

On the way to Atlanta, we stopped in Durham, NC at the Museum of Life and Science.  It was in the mid-60s and sunny - absolutely gorgeous.  The museum is very nice with multiple outdoor and indoor spaces.
One favorite was the misty field.  Probably perfect for the sweltering NC summer, it was appreciated nonetheless!

Another highlight was a butterfly house with tropical jungle plants and thousands of butterflies
Neat metal sculpture in the outdoor garden
Sarah simply is not showing the proper concern in the face of this vicious predator...

In Atlanta, we enjoyed visiting the World of Coke and Stone Mountain, among other attractions (and some family time, naturally).
A stepping stone pool atop Stone Mountain.  No one went in, thankfully!
The kids discovered a great play area replete with passages and pine needles for building nests

Scaling the wall was one of the obstacle challenges

Sarah outside the vault of the SECRET FORMULA.  Oh, it's in there.
Entering the unlimited soda zone.  Try BeBo from South Africa - it's awesome
 Prepping for the 4D movie
Not sure where this one is...
There was a giant ornament outside with a funhouse mirror that the children found quite amusing

Robert is an avid rock-climber.  Sarah likewise enjoys climbing, so Robert took her to his gym, Stone Summit.  It's the largest indoor rock climbing facility in the nation.  Yeah, it was big.
For scale, keep in mind that Robert is over 6'
Sarah climbed until her hands were numb

Returning north, we enjoyed a night at the Great Wolf Lodge, a waterpark and entertainment hotel outside Charlotte.  All kids receive wolf ears.

The kids have gotten into reading Harry Potter.  The hotel had an interactive magic game powered by wands.  Here Sarah is on the receiving end of an expelliarmus spell.
